Girls taking part in a physics lesson at Derby High School. Do you recognise any of them?

IN January, Derby High School will celebrate its 120th birthday.
Two world wars, a devastating fire, an explosion, an earthquake and an intriguing mystery all play their part in the history of the school, and are chronicled in a new book about its history.
Author Bryan Cleary, the school’s former head of English, and Sue Bussey, the school’s library resource manager, spent months painstakingly researching documents, old ledgers and minutes of meetings.

Girls at their desks in the early days of the school.

And the stories that they uncovered have now been detailed in High Life, a dramatic account of the history of the school.
It tells how it all began with an advert on the front page of the Derby Telegraph in 1892 and how the school has survived a catalogue of near disasters.
There are inspiring stories, too, of the people who have kept the school going and the pupils who have been educated there.
In  Bygones Weekly, next Monday, we have more great photos from the last 100 years, and an in-depth look at the book and school’s history.
