I USED to live round the corner from the Rialto which has been mentioned in Bygones recently. I lived in Grosvenor Street and used to collect paraffin for my parents from the garage below. When I later became a postman, I delivered to the caretaker’s flat up a set of stairs behind the club.
I can remember the day Peter and Gordon came to the club because it attracted such a crowd. They were accompanied by Jimmy Nicholl who had once replaced Beatle Ringo Starr for a short period when he was recovering from illness. Jimmy Nicholl pulled into the Nightingale pub car park in his vintage car and got out wearing the traditional rock star glad rags and signed loads of autographs. The venue became a regular for chart-topping groups such as The Applejacks (Tell Me When), Ginger Baker and the Mo Jos. Continue reading
