In the latest contribution from the Ockbrook and Borrowash Historical and Archaeological Society project, Unexamined Lives: the history of the 20th century as it was lived by residents in the Derbyshire village of Borrowash, Helen Clark tells the story of Gill and John Hawksworth.
FESTIVALS, football, work and floods all play a part in Gill and John Hawksworth’s story of their 47 years of married life in Borrowash.
Gill’s family hailed from Farm Street, in Derby, and she met her future husband at a football match.
“John used to live in Chaddesden,” she said.
“I went to watch this other chap playing football at Christ Church Hall. They used it for practicing. That was where I met John. That was 50 years ago now and we’ve been married 47.”
